About Jovan
Jovan La Grotta (b. 2000) is a contemporary oil painter based in Portland, Oregon, whose practice is rooted in a profound exploration of human vulnerability. Through a series of intimate, often visceral figurative works, La Grotta investigates the fragile boundaries of the human psyche and the complex emotional consequences that follow the act of exposing (or not) one’s true self.
Working primarily in oil, La Grotta’s technique balances technical precision with atmospheric abstraction. Their paintings serve as a quiet inquiry into the moments of transition and tenderness that define the human experience. By focusing on the interplay of light, shadow, and the subtle nuances of the human form, they create a space where the viewer is invited to confront the universal anxieties and strengths found in being seen. For La Grotta, the canvas is not just a surface for representation, but a site for deconstructing the masks we wear and the raw reality that lies beneath.
La Grotta’s work has been widely recognized within the Pacific Northwest arts community. Their paintings have been exhibited at institutions such as the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art and Sugarcube Gallery, with a recent, highly-regarded solo exhibition at Sugarcube Gallery. They continue to live and work in Portland, where they are currently developing a new series of works focusing on highlighting forms of vulnerability and the lost art of trusting one another.
